Birkwood Estate developments

Added on 20 October 2008

Eatonfield Plc, who reently purchased Birkwood Estate, have now submitted an outline planning application to SLC for the conversion of Birkwood House to a 28 bedroom hotel with related leisure facilities and approximately 150 residential dwellings, mainly 4/5 bedrooms.

Direcotrs of Eatonfield had a very constructive informal meeting with members of the Lesmahagow Community Council [LCC].  The initial reaction from LCC was one of delight that something positive was being done to protect and maintain Birkwood House.  More residentail housing isn't ideal but it's recognised that it is an essential payoff to get action and movement on the estate.

Regarding the contention of vehicular access via New Trows Road Eatonfield indicated that an independent study had confirmed that the extra traffic was acceptable.  Whether SLC planners think the same is a different question.

All in all LCC support the application in that at long last something positive is happeneing re Birkwood, but recognise the potential difficulties of traffic on New Trows Road.  Assuming the application is approved Eatonfield felt that timing of any development will obviously be affected by the current financial market.
